Maria Aspala chosen to be VASO’s managing director

Maria Aspala: “We progress by listening to our residents and engineering and building quality right-of-occupancy housing to suit different life situations.”

Maria Aspala (LLM) has been appointed the new managing director of VASO as of 29 July 2019 after her predecessor, Pekka Peltomäki, retired. Aspala will begin the transition period in May. Aspala is transferring to VASO from the SATO leased housing company where she worked as the service director. While at SATO, Aspala was involved in duties related to residency maintenance and construction for 10 years.

Konsta Weber, chairperson for VASO’s Board, states, “Right-of-occupancy living represents today’s living. Young people no longer want to tie themselves to big mortgages, but they long for permanence. Moreover, communal living is becoming popular. Maria Aspala has the best prerequisites to make VASO the housing cooperative of today and increase the company’s visibility to a whole new level.”

Pekka Peltomäki recounts his lengthy career in the housing industry, “I began at the Turku Student Village Foundation (TYS) in 1985 and officially became VASO’s managing director at the beginning of 1992. In practice, though, I began before the completion of VASO’s first building. Together with my fine staff, extensive network and other right-of-occupancy companies, I was involved in creating the right-of-occupancy system.”

Starting her position as managing director in the summer, Maria Aspala says that easy living, services for residents and quality are things that VASO will continue to strengthen in the future as well. She states, “In addition to services, we will invest in building new right-of-occupancy housing to ensure a diverse supply of housing in Turku and the surrounding municipalities.”

Varsinais-Suomen Asumisoikeus Oy (VASO) belongs to the City of Turku consortium. Other chief owners include Kaarina, Raisio, Naantali and Lieto. VASO owns 106 right-of-occupancy properties within 5 municipalities. There is a total of 2,662 homes and more than 5,000 residents. The company’s turnover is EUR 24 million and the balance EUR 185 million. The company is a non-profit organization working for the general interest of the population.
