What is the right of occupancy?

Right of occupancy is a hassle-free, secure and flexible form of housing that does not require a large loan. While you live in your right-of-occupancy home, you pay a monthly residence charge that is lower than the general rent level. You can live in your right-of-occupancy home for as long as you like.

Right of occupancy is a strong alternative to renting or owning a home.

How to apply for a right-of-occupancy home

Right of occupancy combines the ease of renting with the security of owning. This form of housing is supported by the state, so you can get a home of your own with a smaller initial investment. The first step is to apply for a nationwide queue number.

Apply for a nationwide queue number through Varke’s online service if you do not already have a valid one. The number costs €9.20, is valid for two years and is always required when you apply for a new home.

Once you have received your queue number, you can fill in a housing application. Your application works as a home search alert: you tell us what you are looking for, such as location, apartment type and building type, and you will receive purchase offers for homes that match your search criteria. You decide which homes you register for.

Depending on your queue number, you can view the home and decide whether to accept it. After signing the agreement, you pay the right-of-occupancy fee and the security deposit, and you receive the keys to your new home when the agreement starts.
